UPDATE: Man charged in Moorhead stabbing
MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) - Official charges have now been filed against the man accused of stabbing one person and threatening to kill multiple other people earlier this week.
24-year old Chance Thibert is charged in both Cass and Clay counties after a string of incidents on March 20. Thibert is charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, three counts of first-degree burglary and second-degree assault in Clay County. He’s charged with felonious restraint, terrorizing and preventing arrest in Cass County.
Moorhead Police were called just before 5 p.m. on March 20 to a stabbing in the 3000 block of 18th St. S. The victim’s girlfriend told police Thibert knocked on the door and asked for the victim. Court documents say while the woman was answering, Thibert pushed the door open and walked into the apartment and then kicked in the couple’s bedroom door. Documents say Thibert punched the victim once in the face in the bedroom, and medical staff later confirmed the victim’s jaw was broken.
The victim told police he threw one punch at Thibert which is when he says Thibert produced an Army-style fixed blade knife and told the victim he was going to kill him. Documents say Thibert then tried to stab the victim in the chest, but the victim put his arm up and was stabbed once in the left bicep.
Documents say the victim have known each other since childhood, but did not provide a reason or motive for the attack.
Thibert fled the scene and was later arrested in Fargo after court documents say he threatened to kill several people inside of a car. The relationship of those inside the vehicle and Thibert is still unclear. Court documents say Thibert told those in the vehicle he had just stabbed someone, pulled out a machete and forced everyone to turn their phones off. One of the victims told police she thought they were all going to die.
That same victim was able to open up a back door and call for help, and Fargo Police soon arrested Thibert.
Thibert will be seen again in Cass County Court on April 26.
