FBI releases redacted transcripts of 911 call with Orlando shooter
The FBI releases redacted transcripts of a 911 call with the man who killed 49 people inside an Orlando night club. The transcripts show Omar Mateen pledging allegiance to a terrorist organization, and admitting to the shootings.
"While we're not releasing the audio, what I can tell you is that while the killer made these murderous statements, he did so in a chilling, calm, and deliberate manner," said the FBI's Ronald Hopper.
There is a summary of conversations between the shooter and crisis negotiators and a minute-by-minute timeline. The summary states the shooter claimed there were bombs in his vehicle, and he had a vest described as the kind they quote "used in France".
The shooter speaks in English and Arabic, according to the 911 transcript, telling the operator he is in Orlando and quote "I did the shootings".
The transcript omits specific references to the shooter's name, or the terrorist organization he pledges allegiance to.
Investigators previously identified the group as ISIS and were asked Monday why the transcripts are redacted.
"Part of the redacting is, is meant to not give credence to individuals who have done terrorist acts in the past. We're not going to propagate their rhetoric, their violent rhetoric,” explains Hopper. “And we see no value in putting those individuals' names back out there. We're trying to prevent future acts from happening again. And for cowards like this one, people like that influence them so we're not going to continue to put their names out front."
Hopper went on to say the FBI currently has no evidence that the shooter was directed by a foreign terrorist group, but was radicalized domestically.
